Basic:
Most examiners are generally strict, they check your appearance and the way you respond.
Please ensure to
Dress smart, treat it like a job interview.
Adjust your hairstyle.
When asked, answer politely and in a neutral tone.
Be friendly, you may change their mood.
Greet them i.e. Ohayo gozaimasu, Konnichiwa, to create a relaxing environment.
On the day of your Practical Exam:
Proceed to the designated window to check-in. A briefing will be held and information will be given on which course will be taken. You will be told not to memorize the course but it will be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the course map. Understand the route and know what to expect from, for example, if you are passing an uncontrolled intersection, how to approach entering S-curve and crank, a section where there is a "stop" sign, and others.
Ensure to familiarize yourself with the course route to help you prepare for what to expect and do during the examination.
Other precautions:
Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for the examination. Sandals, open shoes, high-heels are prohibited.
Wear glasses if required.
You will have a chance for a test drive, approximately 100 meters, before your actual exam starts. So relax and stay calm.
Scoring is from getting on until getting off the car (test drive not included). You will get 100 points at the start of your exam, and passing is 70 points or above. Points deduction is by 5, 10 and 20.
Check Points and Tips to Follow:
Section 1: Pre-boarding check
Start walking from the left side of the car.
Head to the rear side and bend down to check for any obstacles under or behind the car.
Proceed to the front side by passing on the left side (clockwise direction). Bend down to check for any obstacles under or in front of the car.
Continue walking clockwise, and when you reach the front-right side of the car, check your left and right for any incoming cars.
When it is safe, walk towards the driver's door.
Section 2 Getting into the car
Ensure no cars are coming from behind then open the door and get in as quickly as possible but with care.
Gently close the door while looking at the back.
Cheerfully greet the examiner.
Section 3: Preparation before Starting the Engine
Lock the door.
Adjust the position and inclination of the seat. Ensure that you can comfortably reach the pedals such as clutch, brake, and accelerator.
The knee should be slightly bent. Avoid over-stretch or under-stretch. Adjust the seat's backward and forward position if needed.
With your lower back touching the back seat with a minimal gap, extend and straighten both your arms, ensuring both wrists are leveled to the top of the steering wheel. Adjust the seat’s inclination to let the backseat touch your shoulder or with a minimal gap.
Adjust the rearview mirror with the back of the head on the headrest. Do it with your left hand so as not to change the position of your head.
Put on your seatbelt.
